KZN FISHING REPORT - 08th MAY, 2010

FISHING REPORT 08TH MAY 2010

Looks like the sea will have settled down by the time this report gets published so we anglers will be able to at the very least wet a line this weekend. Today looking like the windier of the two days with Sunday looking pretty good with a light northerly blowing all day.

The last couple days the 2-3 meter ground swell has prevented most anglers from fishing so reports are pretty slim! Starting down the south coast Dean Pretorious tells me there are quit a few “shoal” kob coming out along the lower south coast between Port Edward and Margate. These fish have been ranging between the 2-10kg sizes. These fish have mostly been around the points and rocky areas on the low tide.

Shad have apparently been coming out at Port Shepston but that is unconfirmed. The sand spit has also had a few kob come out on artificial’s but its still early on the season which runs to October.

Allowal Shoal keeps producing large numbers of wahoo. The bonito have been “wild” and so that’s the reason the fish are hanging around there. In between the wahoo very large couta and some yellow fin tuna have been caught. Allowal seems to be a very healthy reef and I’m sure this is due to the bottom fishing restriction. You don’t hear of catches around Durban anymore like there have been on Allowal or the upper north coast!

The blacktip kingfish on the upper south coast are starting to wind down but I did hear some rumours of the North and South piers in Durban holding some large specimens and even some big GT’s (giant trevally).
With the big sea around Durban I have had no more to add since reports from the weekend. Which were plenty of snoek around blue lagoon and Durban north beaches and some whisperings of couta? I say whisperings because start asking questions and the anglers miraculously become mute!!!

Up North from the shore there isn’t much to report as the sea has been on its head.
Before the big swell came through there were some lovely size grunter being caught between Blue Lagoon and Snake Park. Most the anglers have been using white cracker shrimp, prawn, sea lice or natal sardine as bait.

Sharks and skates are disappearing as the winter conditions are far from preferable for these species. The large kob will start to come out at Tugela soon if not already! To target these fish its best to fish with live mullet or shad during the night.

The ski anglers have been catching some serious couta up the north coast, and even better news is the sharks seem to be absent.
Richards bay has been producing some serious “gas bottles” (aka yellowfin tuna) with some fish in excess of 70kgs. Warren Bennet managed to boat one in the 70kgs range amongst a few other fish.

More reports have come in of pilot shoals of Sardines in the upper Transkei, this of course is promising but the last two years have had good early season signs as well so we can only hope!!! Tight lines for what looks to be a pretty decent weekend of weather…
May the Sharks claim victory today over the Stormers!!!!!

Port Edward Ski boat club

The Port Edward ski boat competition (hosted my Marlin Ski Boat club) last weekend was a huge success. A 100 boats participated, 77 couta were weighed in with the average fish weighing 17.68kgs. The winning fish was a magnificent fish of 34.48kgs caught by Wayne Beissner.

Roger Allchin boated the biggest other game fish with a kingfish of 41.16kgs on the boat Shake Shake. Top junior was Jacob Plenary with a 14.24 couta and top lady Jessica Jarvis with a 18.76 couta.
