FISHING REPORT 13TH MARCH 2010
Angling
After nearly a week of continuing Easterly winds, cold water has moved in and as a result most fish have turned off and seem to have lockjaw. However the weatherman predicts a light south west wind and hopefully this will bring back some much needed warm water to put the fish back on the bite. There are only sporadic catches of shad being reported but the warmer water should put them back on the bite.
The inedible species however seem to have adapted to the cold water and sand sharks in particular are keeping anglers busy as there are good reports of fish on both North and South Coasts. A few nice size sand sharks have been caught in the Tinley, Ballito and Tongaat areas recently together with some brown skates. Lloyd Pereira from The Kingfisher landed a nice sandie of around 30kg’s at Chakas Rock.
The Durban Bay has slowed down a bit but if you persevere you might get lucky. Pete Marriott from The Kingfisher did just that and was rewarded with a magnificent grunter of 4.4gk’s fishing from Two Grumpy Old Men. A few smaller grunter were caught as well as a long tail brown ray.
News from Terry Nel about the Port Edward area is that the river estuaries seem to be the only places that are producing fish and gunter are the fish on the bite there and on Sunday afternoon Christine landed four in the Mtamvuna River. Otherwise, little else are around and hopes are that fishing will improve as the season approaches.
The Transkei is also fishing well despite the cold water with favourable reports coming in from the Port St Johns and Hole in The Wall areas. Mostly big ragged tooth and hammerhead sharks are coming out but there have been some good size grey and spinner shark activity as well. Anglers fishing these venues at night are getting some small kob and grunter.
Ski Boats and fishing ski’s
Ski Boats and fishing ski’s at the moment are experiencing the same conditions as their rock and surf counterparts and are finding fish hard to come by due to the cold water and game fish in particular are hard to come by. The Aliwal shoal and Protea banks seem to be producing some fish as there are good reports of mainly yellow fin tunny being caught at these venues. The only report of couta come from the North Coast where Gavin Davies managed to land a fine couta of 19 kg from his fishing ski.

13th TFT Tournament.
The results supplied by Chris Diggs on the 13th TFT tournament that was fished recently at Jozini Dam. Well this year’s event has now come and gone and what a success I believe it was with all that the sponsors were able to contribute. The new format, in terms of the 550mm qualifying length worked and is now the benchmark for future competitions as it ensures less fish mortality and also makes scorecard tallying smoother running and a lot less time consuming.
The weather was great this year but looks can be deceiving and the anglers were hard-pressed to find and land qualifying fish. Hats off and well done to those that did! I am pleased to say that all fish caught and recorded were released live to the water and I received no reports of mortalities. Below are the results for the week-end. Please bear in mind that where there were two fish of the same length caught, the one caught earlier took the advantage and so appeared higher on the scoreboard.
OVERALL WINNER – Longest Fish
Gordon Reid – MG Print Services - With a fish of 630mm – Main prize of R10 000.00 cash sponsored by Honda Marine, Pinetown, a further R3000.00 cash from Waterdog Promotions for releasing the fish alive and other sponsored prizes.
2nd PLACE
John Rich – Stoney Ridge Offroad Academy – With a fish of 625mm – Garmin Oregon 550 hand held GPS with waterway and street cards sponsored by Antalis - South Africa and other sponsored prizes.
3rd PLACE
Justin Osborne - With a fish of 600mm caught on Friday at 12h15 hours – Free week-end for two sponsored by Shayamoya Tigerfishing and Game Lodge and other sponsored prizes.
4th PLACE.
Dustin Cooper – With a fish of 600mm caught on Saturday at 09h30 hours – Fragram Hi-Pressure cleaner sponsored by Paper Connection, Pinetown and other sponsored prizes.
MOST FISH OVER 550MM – INDIVIDUAL
Mathew Poultney – 2 fish with a combined length of 1140mm.
MOST FISH OVER 500MM – TEAM
BOAT 8 – Nick Gillings, Randal Poultney, Mathew Poultney and Tony Talbot – 9 fish with a combined length of 4890mm.
In closing, and on behalf of Waterdog Promotions, I would like to thank each and every sponsor and participant of the event for their contributions in making it the success that it was. I look forward to seeing all of you there next year – diarise the 4th and 5th March 2011.
