KZN FISHING REPORT - 4TH JULY 2009

FISHING REPORT 4 TH JULY 2009.

Anglers and Anticipated Sardine Run

Recent cold fronts and storms have made angling almost impossible due to extremely heavy seas and high winds. However prospects for the week end look much better with low swells and light variable winds predicted. To date there have only been sporadic sightings of the now much anticipated sardine run. Some small pockets were sighted along the lower South Coast last week but netters were unable to net any. On the positive side, huge shoals of sardines have been spotted off the upper Transkei coast. After the bad weather these shoals seem to have got some direction and are moving up the coast at a steady rate, so hopefully there will be some action on the coast this week end.
Locally anglers can expect to catch some shad which before the bad weather set in were being caught freely mainly along the South Coast and in the Umgeni area in Durban. Garrick should also come back on the bite and were caught in fair numbers on the South Coast, some around the 8kg mark. There are some reports that a couple of garrick were caught in the Ballito area on the North Coast so anglers up there should start targeting them rather sooner than later.

Raj Rajman from Verulam, caught a 10kg pompano on Saturday morning, the 20th June at Sheffield Beach. Bait used was sea lice and prawn combo and the tackle used was a Daiwa Sl30 reel with 20 pound Kingfisher Giant Abrasion line and 0.6mm leader. According to Raj this fish gave a very intense fight that lasted about 10 minutes.

Ski Boats and Fishing ski’s
Ski Boats and Fishing ski’s have been shore bound due to the bad weather but this week end things should return to normal. Fishing Ski’s have had a rather dismal couta run this year with the exception to ski’s fishing the deep reefs off Zinkwazi where some really excellent catches of above average size fish have been caught on a regular basis. On the South Coast ski’s have been restricted to a very good snoek run with only the odd couta being reported.
