KZN FISHING REPORT - 07TH FEBRUARY 2009

ROCK AND SURF
FISHING REPORT 07TH FEBRUARY 2009.
Anglers have had the fortunate luck lately to be blessed with some very good weather. Light winds have put fish on the bite and anglers that target flatfish have had a ball at most known spots on the North and South Coast where there have been some very big sand sharks landed. Brown skates have also given anglers some good fun at these venues.
The Umgeni and La Lucia stretches have also produced some good results as far as flatfish and edibles are concerned. Big sand sharks, duckbills and brown skates have made up the bulk of the catch whist the odd stumpie and pompano make up the edible batch.
Flatfish angling along the Zululand beaches are now in full swing and places like Amatikulu and Port Durnford are producing some wonderful results. There are also reports of the odd big sandie at these venues but the place to be for the sandies is the middle North Coast. There are some unconfirmed reports of quite a few sandies in the 80 kg to 100 kg that have been landed there recently. Anglers targeting sharks in this area have also had their fair share of fun with zambezi and black fin sharks.

Terry Nel from Tacklenet in Port Edward reports that, not much took place week before last apart from shad and two hammerhead sharks. Last week has been different though and as shad are an everyday catch now, the game fish have moved in. As of now, four couta have been taken off Splash Rock over as many days. One of 20kg's was taken by Dean Pretorius of ESA using his Daiwa Saltiga reel and a yellowtail head as bait on a slide.

The next morning, one of 23kg came out caught on a live shad and since then, one of 16 and another of 21kg's were both taken on live shad and by the same angler, Kobus van Vuuren. Other fish caught there have been hound, hammerhead and grey sharks and a thorn tail skate of 40kg was landed there to. A number of hound and grey sharks have also been caught at other spots up the coast. For more info about fishing in the Port Edward area, contact Terry on 0393 113013.

January Fishing report
January 2009 Fishing Report - Shayamoya Game Lodge, thanks Ryan Tippett for this report. “Well, 2008 has already come and gone and 2009 has brought good rains. The weather has started to get really hot. Due to the heavy rain, (They had over 140ml) the muddy water has rapidly pushed out into the main dam. The conditions can be expected to change suddenly as they are expecting more heavy rains. Ryan finds the ginger-beer coloured water to be good for fishing as the tigers seem to feed well in it and they seem less suspicious of bait and lures than when the water is very clear. This is the water between the really muddy stuff and the clean, clear water. The water temperature has also picked up now and sits at around 28 degrees.

As the days are getting so hot it is imperative to head out early because by 9.00 the fishing is virtually dead. Late afternoon can be good, but has tended to be a bit windy of late. BAIT - Sardines are working best at the moment. Ryan has been fishing them along deep drop-offs of between 5 and 10 meters deep with great success. They picked up a 3.5kg tiger a couple days ago in 10 meters of water. It took a sardine fillet off the bottom. Ryan likes to use the heads, bodies and tails. The heads are often good for large barbell / catfish. The tail section is definitely a favorite and seems to have more luck. In some parts of the dam there are frustratingly large amounts of bait stealing crabs, (or possibly very small fish?) that reduce the sardine to a skeleton in quick time.

It is very difficult to detect these pests stealing your bait. Ryan has noticed this along the river stretch and in some places on the dams western shores. Their occurrence is erratic and unpredictable. These "crabs" are clearly less fond of the chicken, but the chicken doesn't work as well as sardine when fished off the bottom. They have been catching well on the chicken too. Ryan fishes the chicken close to the surface as it works best when kept moving. Chicken is highly effective when the tigers are feeding in the shallows.

This occurs most regularly in the early morning and late afternoon. In still weather one can see the swirls from large tigers that are feeding in the shallow water. LURES - Spinners and spoons are deadly at the moment, especially when fished along the large weed banks opposite the campsite. Shallow diving Strike Pro crank baits fished fairly quickly are working in these areas too. The usual coluors like fire-tiger, orange, red & white etc. will work. They have tried drop shot for tigers again recently and got a lot of bites, but it ultimately ended up fruitless as well as being a bit costly. Most of the drop-shots ended up cut and minus the tail on the first bite.
