KZN FISHING REPORT - 06 December 2008

ROCK & SURF - South Coast
There are some reports of very big honeycomb rays being caught along the South Coast recently. Anglers fishing in the Umkomaas and Green Point areas have landed a few very good specimens all in the 50 kg to 70 kg range. Along with these fish a few big sand sharks and brown skates have also been caught. Places such as, Scottburgh and Umdoni points are also fishing very well for these particular fish. In the Port Edward area, sea conditions have been perfect for rock and surf and a number of fish have been landed there in the past week and as expected at this time of year, the hammers are there. Three have been landed at Splash Rock and some 'sad stories' have been typical of these sinker eating sharks. Garrick are eating readily and live mullet are being used as live bait. A well known angler there had a bonus day off Splash Rock after a ski boat gave him some live mackerel. This lucky angler landed two garrick, a brown skate, a grey shark and a hammer head shark. Shad season is now open and some have already been found here so enjoy! They are small. Thanks Terry Nel from Tacklenet, in Port Edward, tel 0393 113 013 for this report.
As far as the edible species are concerned, anglers can now target shad as the banned season is over. There are still plenty big shad around and reports of fish up to the 4 kg mark have been landed in the Isipingo and Toti areas. There are still quite a few good brusher around, pompano have also made an appearance with some fish being landed in the middle South Coast area. At this time of the year the Umkomaas area works well for both edible and inedible fish, but if anglers are willing to travel a quick trip to the Tugella north bank area will almost definitely be a worthwhile exercise when the right weather patterns occur. After a few hot days and light North Easterly winds this venue can provide anglers a great days angling as there are some good edible fish to be had and for the heavier tackle boys, some excellent flat fish and shark angling can be expected. Get out your Daiwa Saltiga’s and Saltist reels, these fish fight hard.

ROCK & SURF - North Coast
Further north the Cape Vidal area has also started fishing very well with the first of the big kingfish as well as big raggies being landed. Further north, anglers willing to travel to the Black Rock and Rocktail bay area should now get stuck into some big fish. The giant kingfish that frequent this area now have been spotted chasing baitfish at Rocktail Bay. Big sharks can also be targeted with the most common specie there at this time of the year being the exiting black fin and spinner sharks.
Early last Thursday morning, Gibson Kirsten fishing from the Durban Bay of Plenty Pier with a sardine fillet as bait and 4.5kg nylon, caught a snoek of 3kg’s.

SKI BOATS & FISHING SKI'S
The Ski Boat and fishing ski fraternity are now both seeking game fish which seemed to have started a bit early this year but never the less some good fish have started feeding. Boats and Ski’s operating in and around the Scotburgh, Park Rynie and Ballito area have landed some good size couta as well as tunny and the odd dorado. Ski boats in particular have had some good catches on the Aliwal shoal when conditions have been favorable. This venue works particularly well when the North to South current brings in the warmer clean water. The Protea banks have also produced some bigger tunny along with the odd couta and wahoo.
