ROCK & SURF
With summer finally settling in anglers are finding a new
variety of fish. The first hot, humid and windless days
have finally given anglers new hope as the past few months
have really lived up to windy and erratic weather expectations.
Those anglers that target flatfish are off to a great start
to the season a locally there have been some very good catches
of sand sharks, honeycomb rays and sizable brown skates.
These fish are now feeding on both North and South Coasts,
particularly near river mouths that have discoloured the
water somewhat. Good catches have been reported from the
Toti and Warner Beach areas particularly as far as the sandies
are concerned. Traditional places such as Errol Hays and
Scottburgh are also fishing very well. As far as the edible
species are concerned, there is now a variety that anglers
can target. There are still quite a few good brusher around
and some big specimens are being caught along the Twini
ledge and at Isipingo. Pompano have also made an appearance
with some fish being landed in the Sezella and Umdoni areas.
However at this time of the year the Umkomaas area works
well for both edible and inedible fish.
In the Port Edward area, Terry Nel from Tacklenet (tel number
039 311 3013) reports that surf conditions are good and
the water is clearing up, but still not much to report.
An eagle ray was landed at Splash Rock this week and also
two garrick. The garrick were taken using live mullet as
bait. Apart from that, the small bait fish such as stone
bream and black tail are few. If anglers are willing to
travel a quick trip to the Tugella North Bank area will
almost definitely be a worthwhile exercise when the right
weather patterns occur. After a few hot days and light north
easterly winds this venue can provide anglers a great days
angling as there are some good edible fish in the form of
grunter, small kob, kingfish and the elusive lobotes to
be had and for the heavier tackle boys, some excellent flatfish
and shark angling can be expected. Further north the Cape
Vidal area has also started fishing very well with the first
of the big kingfish being landed as well as some rockfish
in the various forms of snapper, rock-cod and kob being
caught at night. |

SKI BOATS & FISHING SKI'S
The Ski Boat and fishing ski fraternity are now both seeking
game fish which seemed to have started a bit early this year
but never the less some good fish have started feeding. Boats
and Ski’s operating in and around the Scottburgh and Park
Rynie area have landed some shoal size couta as well as tunny
and the odd dorado. Ski boats in particular have had some good
catches on the Aliwal shoal when conditions have been favorable.
Quite a few good size tunny are being reported as well as wahoo
and to a lesser degree couta.
