KZN FISHING REPORT - 3 May 2007ROCK & SURF - South CoastAnglers who took advantage of the excellent weather last Friday returned some very good results. Low swells and an almost windless day saw many an angler on the beaches. Down at Sezela things got quite hectic as small natal snoek came close inshore and anglers fishing for shad landed many of these fine eating fish. A pompano of almost 12 kg was also landed here in the morning session. In the Port Edward area, fishing seems to have picked up a bit. Cold sea water temperatures there earlier last week brought the hound sharks in and competition anglers scored many points from their catches of these strong fighting species. As the weekend approached and conditions began to settle, the odd shad showed up and even a couple of garrick were landed off Splash Rock. The same point produced a number of hammer head sharks also this week. Successful landing of these species rests on the skill of allowing the shark to take long runs and tire out at a distance from the rocks and only when the hammer begins to surface during the fight, then only pull the fish giving it more line if it wants to run again. Rushing this fish makes it dive and many have been lost this way. For more info about the fishing in the lower South Coast give Terry at Tacklenet a call on 0393 11 3013. Further north the Umkomaas area has over the past week or so produced quite a few shad but the main target fish in this area now is small shoal kob. These fish must have made this area their home as almost daily some fine fish have been landed here. Best baits that have been working is chokka and if available, red eye sardine. These fish are being caught all along the north bank in discoloured water. Winkle High rocks is also producing quite a few shad and the odd pompano. The Toti to Isipingo area has also produced some good fish recently, mainly small grunter but grey sharks move in during the morning and afternoon sessions to spoil thing somewhat for anglers.
